Parliament survey and 3D modeling

Small 3D model of the Parliament building created from 750 photos

We created two versions of the 3D model of the building, the first one can be seen above. A small model was made by processing 750 distant photos. This could show the georefenced model of the building with up-to 10 cm precision. The second complete set consisted of 10000 pictures.

Measurement

This is a 5-step process, the hardest of which is the stitching of the images and finding their place in space. The program recognizes typical patterns and pairs images to put them into space.

Surface mesh generated from 77 million points using small triangles

Creating the mesh/surface

We create a surface from millions of points - 77 million to be exact - using small triangles.

Textured model surfaces created from perpendicular building photos

Textures

We apply textures to the model's surfaces from perpendicular shots of the building.

Results

The fully-detailed model consists of 1 billion polygons, so we only showcase a few examples here.

Every part of the model can be precisely measured - depending on the detailing - all the way to 1cm precision.
